This is a brief history of Thanjai Periya Kovil in Tamil pdf download. It was constructed by the Danish adventurer Vitus Bering in 1758, while he was exploring the seas near Greenland. His vessel got stuck in ice, and his crew abandoned Bering on board while they were salvaging what they could from their vessel to help them survive. "Thanjai" means "shelter" or "refuge" and it is translated as the temple of refuge on the shoreline which has been built by an ancient sage on order of Indra himself to save all shipwrecked sailors stranded at sea. The story of the actual founding and the name "Thanjai Periya Kovil" has been handed down through generations, and has been recorded in ancient palm leaf manuscripts which are no longer in existence. The version of the story handed down is that a group of sailors from Thiruvarur, led by a 'pirate' (pirate meaning here someone who plunders treasure from another country), was shipwrecked on what is today's Thanjai beach. They were saved from starvation by eating fish caught off the Rejapalli fort (at that time being built by Tippu Sultan). They were saved from the cold by a sage who built a refuge for them, where they could survive until the snow melted and they could walk home. In gratitude, they decided to dedicate a temple to Indra, who had saved them. The name "Periya Kovil", meaning Big Temple, was given because this was the first temple dedicated to Indra in Thanjavur district. Currently, Thanjai Periya Kovil is the oldest existing stone temple in Tamil Nadu and second oldest in South India next only to Belur Sri Vidya Vinayaka Temple (built by Narasimha Deva Raya of Vijayanagara Empire) built around 1509 CE. The Temple is made of granite and the roof is covered with slabs of stone. The architectural features include "taranga" (a tower over the shrine), a "mukhamandapa" (porch), a "gopuram", a Nandi mandapam, pillared halls leading to the sanctum, side shrines for Panchayatana puja and many other mandapams. During its prime days it was a centre for Vedic, Puranic and Agamic learning where scholars from far flung places would come to study. The original complex contained 41 shrines, 51 pillared halls and 13 porches. During the days of Tipu Sultan, from 1780 to 1799 CE, this temple was a target for his raids and it was repeatedly pillaged and destroyed. By 1860 CE, there were only five shrines left, and by 1962 CE only three were left. The temple complex has been the target of thefts as well. Between September 2007 and July 2008 thieves stole around 70 slabs from the roof of the Garbhagriha or sanctum sanctorum, temporarily halting daily pujas in the temple. In October 2008 a further 100 stone slabs were stolen from the same site which resulted in pujas being once again halted from March 2009 till September 2010 when repairs could be completed.
